Dear Mr. Buron,
you have created an impressive body of work. Thank you for sharing these amazing pictures.
I am writing an article about famous PCT hikers for my hiking blog which I started this year (in german) and would like to use your image of Billy Goat, because I am naming him as one of the legends of the trail.
Would you allow me to use your image 55530270 of him? (I am not allowed to post an URL here unfortunately, but its the one from 27-AUG-2005.
Thank you for considering my question, have a great day!
Kind regards from Germany

Hey Deems, Are you still out there? I was wondering what happened to a couple of the old NZTI crew and yourself. I had a couple of beers with WJP a couple of months ago.

We met August 23rd at the campsite and you offered me a sip of rum - thanks - I enjoyed it. I'd like to contact you about the Pica stove design but I don't have your contact information. Would you please call (916) 730-4640 or email me if you will kindly accept my question? Thanks, SALLY

Hey I thought it was you who I ran into up at Papoose Lake in the last weekend of June 2013. I had to double take online. I should have said something earlier, but was shy. Great job with this blog, it has inspired me to explore the place I love to the next level. Keep hiking and stay healthy, who knows maybe I'll catch you again up in the mountains!

Nice site, thanks.

Hi Deems, I very much enjoyed your Trinity High Route photos and your maps have been a huge help in planning my own routes through the area. Thanks for taking the time do to all that.

I was at the burned campsite by the Smith Lake inlet a few years back and, strangely, I too was inspired to photograph the trees and logs. It's such an odd-feeling spot. Beautiful, of course, but with a sort of quiet, almost tragic sense to it, like an old church or a cemetery. Not a sad place, exactly, but dignified and worthy of respect.
Anyway, thanks for the all the photos and invaluable information.

I'd really like some info on the route between Mirror Lake and Smith Lake. If this route is not too extreme, it could present a very interesting 4 day loop out of Stuart Fork (I was thinking of this: trailhead to Morris Meadows to Mirror Lake to Smith Lake to Alpine Lake to trailhead) How difficult is the off trail portions of this route? Where are the most difficult sections?

VERY impressive collection and great camping photos. Awesome shots of your fires and the sky. I want to load the truck and head out into the hills right now!!....nothing beats winter camping.

David,
Loved your ski trip into Marble Mtn turnsallyear.com. Been there. I hiked into Cliff Lake the next week on snow, and it was incredible. Contact me with your email if you choose, we have adventures in common.
Guest 07-May-2012 16:55
Hi Deems,

Thanks for the site and great pictures. I did a hike/ski trip into the Marbles last week and your photos were helpful in estimating how the terrain and snowpack might be this time of year. I posted a trip report on turns-all-year dot com (under May 2012 trip reports), which has a few photos of the Marbles with spring snow. Such a great area to visit!

Cheers,
David

Hey Deems, I want to know how did you deal with the National Parks while hiking with Kelly...Did you go around or skip them...and did you primarily let Kelly hike without being on a leash? Thanks Mark
John Duncan 18-Aug-2011 02:01
It was nice to run into you along the trail and get to chat. Have a fun hike up north. You are a fantastic photographer. GQ is a funny trail name and the folks who named me are great. Duncan is my real name so I'll go by that too. No more flats Deems, seriously. Cheers.
Andy Howard 18-May-2011 05:52
Hello Deems. This is "Mr. Howard"- the camo'd hunter you bumped into at Dogwood lake last fall and were kind enough to feature in a picture on your site. I had forgotten your name, but I finally got around to searching the internet and found you and your site. Great pictures. Very flattering to find a picture of me! Believe it or not, I did wind up taking a rather nice buck the next morning. Lots of work getting him out of there, but that is part of the fun. If you are interested email me and I will send you a few images. Once again great site- what a resource for my favortie place, the Marbles.

Love your Photos, recently my husband and I did the circle loop, I search for Deep lake to see if anyone had photos, and wow, it is wonderful to view your photos and remember when we were standing in the same spot. We have explored other local wilderness, Grizzly is my favorite.

Thank you for your pictures of the Trinity Alps. I will be going from the 24th to the 30th of this month.
After looking at your pictures I really can't wait. You seem like a great person to ask this. Can I get from mirror lake to grizzly lake? I would love your input.
Thank you very much.

Hello Deems,
I have really been enjoying your photos! I have been to many of the places you have photographed in the Marble Mts. and Trinity Alps. The other spots are still on my list! I am curious whether you have any pics of Man Eaten Lake in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. My father went there 40 years ago and loved it. I went there about 15 years ago, but have lost my pics from that visit. I am curious whether you have any or no where I can get some. And yes, I will go back there! Take care!

Your pictures really inspired me. Thank you so much. I live near the little town of Jacksonville, Oregon, and visit the Red Buttes as much as I can. Can I ask you a few questions about your trips there?
thanks, andy

Deems, I saw your Muir Hut photos last night...and made a comment at the site. Today, I read at your profile about your Nikkormat in '73.
It reminded me of my first FOREIGN order (from Yokohama, I had to figure out how many Yen/USD etc. PLUS how to do a foreign International Money Order ) ,THIS was while I was a Junior in High School, from Japan in '72 of a black body Nikomat FTN f/1.4. For 8 years it went with me every where...from Junior College photo journalist to '79 and two months in Europe.
Your mention of your camera reminded of mine. I still own it. It was/is a 'tank' and survived much in my life: 10 ft. falls in Modesto (me attached) to 3 ft. falls with myself and two others falling on top of it on the stone streets of Venice. I then had to remove its cracked lens filter with a pair of pilers while at the top of the Pisa Tower '79. AND the camera ALWAYS worked. It was heavy but it held up. I still have it, and it still works in '09. I doubt any camera of the 90's and 00's could have stood up to what I exposed this camera.
THANKS for jogging my memory cells.

Deems, Thanks for this forum for my photo memories. YOUR PHOTOS at Muir Hut stoke my memory. I wish you'd shown the inside. I know it's not pretty but for those who have been there...It is so memorable. Outside the hut is incomparable beauty...Seeing the inside of the hut is the grim reality of the stay. I stayed inside, you stayed outside among the stars. You captured the outside beauty in your pictures...MANY KUDOS.

I hope you are notified when 'posts' such as mine are placed. As I wish you are able to read what I have taken the time to write about the incredible time you have spent to photograph such beauty in the few pics I have seen. I spend time to write and say, "Great Job", you spent days to take the photos. I've done little. You've done LOTS!

Deems,

It was nice to meet you and Kelly in the Unitas. I hope you enjoyed your time and were able to get some quality shots.

Your images are great, they make me want to turn back around and get away from the city.

Hi Deems. That photo you took of me in the Goat Rocks wilderness last year is the cover of the September issue of the PCT "Communicator" magazine. Another photo win for you, and I get on the cover just for randomly happening to be where you were ... thanks!

You even got my best side! :-) (walking away, at a distance)

In the "weirdly serendipitous" department, my wife hasn't hiked that section yet, and we're hoping to hike it together starting literally tomorrow if a couple of minor issues don't get in the way.

What a find! Been treking the TAs since high school days(early 70's) and your photos remind me of the reason. Any opinion on the best route to Smith Lake? Was going to go to Grizzly this fall but I'D heard about Smith and Morris and was unable to make it on a try from Alpine Lk. a few years back. Your photos make me want to try again! Keep up the gracefull work.

Yahoo! I've found the area for our next week-long....We are 3 girlfriends who've hiked together for years despite living some distance apart(Bellingham and Olympia, Wa. and Portland, Or.).We've done the West Coast Trail, Vancouver Is., the Wallawas in NE Or., the Wind Rivers in Wyoming, Yosemite, the Olympics, Coyote Gulch and Bryce Canyon in SW, as well as Grand Canyon and all over the North Cascades...We're getting older and find we like more camp/exploration time w/o the pressure to keep moving..so a more easily accsessable area with lots of directions to explore is ideal. Any suggestions? or a book you recommend? Your photography reflects such a reverence for this area...such worthy work...Thank you!

I just image searched for photos of the Marbles/Russians needing some inspiration for sitting at a desk writing grants for trail projects and I found your galleries. It reminded me that the computer can be a wonderful thing... all these amazing photographs of places that I love right at my fingertips.

Wanted to let you know that I will be working quite a bit in the English Peak/Hamilton Camp end of the Marbles this summer. It burned hot out there, but you can sure see the sunsets good now. Please come join us sometime. I'll have mules going up and down the hill, or you are welcome to drop in and share a meal! Again, thanks for the great images.

Hi Deems-

I am a friend and student of Richard Halstead's. He told me about you when I let him know I was hitting the PCT SoCal this year. I see you are PCT alum as well. Perhaps you can give me your two cents worth.
I'll be at the kick-off this year.

Fabulous! Your passion for the wilds is incredible, great photos of the foxtails in particular.

I am going to forge a Klamath long trail this summer that incorporates wilderness and conifer species. I found your through your high country route of the Alps. I plan to use the Grizzly-Mirror route to get to Caribou and beyond from the south.

Check out my evolving website of the planned route:

Subject: Writing up a story from PCT 1977

Dear Deems,

What wonderful photos. Sounds like you have had lots of exposure to the PCT.

I recently retired after working for 22+ years at Humboldt State University (HSU) in northern California . . . we can't be too far from each other as fellow northern Californians. I am working on a "Trailside Reader" with a colleague from HSU . . . that will include real tales of trailside humor, experiences with "trail angels" or "trail magic", encounters with wildlife or wild weather, stories of being lost or found, of well-known trail hazards or favorite places to stop. The stories are usually about a particular area of the trail. I am wondering whether you have a favorite story that you might consider writing up from your experience. The stories shouldn't be long . . . 1,000 – 2,000 words (less than a good day's elevation gain). Perhaps there is a story with a companion photo or two.

I have put the longer call for submissions that I have circulated to more recent thru hikers. I hope you might think about it or suggest someone who might be interested in writing such a piece. E-mail me if you have some questions or thoughts . . . and I'd be happy to send you the full call for submissions.

Deems, well I thought I had covered all of the Trinity Alps, so I moved on to Emigrant, then Yosemite, an then John Muir. But now I see I've missed something! Any chance you could send me your route? I'l like to go next summer.
Thanks!

Deems...I was researching a Coleman lantern (Mod. 200) I've had for many years. I came across a pic of yours. Mine was made the same month and year as yours (12/1950). It's in very good shape, original globe. Can you give me an approximate value? I know it's difficult without seeing it. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Thanks for the great shots of my beloved Trinity Alps, which I have explored since 1977. I have explored the slopes above Boulder Lakes and below Mt Hilton just poking around. I would not have guessed there would be a traverse in this area. You are more mountain goat than me. I very much appreciate going on an adventure that is beyond my skills and seeing some others that I have managed to get to as well. Thanks so much for sharing!

I plan on doing it with my dog next year, and am dying to talk to others who have had their dog on trail. Thanks, Gail aka "Wheeew". Amazing pics by the way! Funny to sign on here and see Ron Strickland comment!! Haven't seen him in years!

You have taken some damn fine pictures. I remember taking photos of a lot of the spots you've been in the Trinities and Marbles, in the 70s and 80s, and you feel like you've got to make it out alive and show someone where you went. The film is like diamonds. I never tried that ledge above mirror lake. You call it a route. It gets your heart pumpin to set off across something like that.

Deems,
Exceptional photos! You capture 'it'... convey 'it'. Powerful, mysterious, vast, lonely, perfect. The rich, the stark, the cold, the hard. Thanks for bringing the feeling back. Your wqork is appreicated. I shall venture again into these places. Your photos stir me to do it sooner than later.

Hello Deems:

I was surfing along, doing a little research and came across your site. Some beautiful images caught with great lighting. I too stayed a night on Muir Pass, but there were two others with me. It was while hiking the Muir Trail solo in 1993... I'm a writer, and recently published a book about a ranger in Sequoia and Kings Canyon who went missing in 1996. The book is called The Last Season. You may enjoy it since it looks like you've been to many of the places that set the scenes in the book... Anyway. Thanks for taking me back into the mountains while sitting here at my desk. Kind regards, Eric Blehm
